Meet Lynda Buitrago

Lynda Buitrago earned her Master of Science in Human Nutrition from the University of Bridgeport (Connecticut) and is a Certified Nutrition Specialist (CNS). She creates personalized nutrition and lifestyle plans for people with thyroid disorders and other autoimmune conditions.

What was your path to becoming a nutritionist? What inspired you to choose this profession?

At age 26, I developed severe cystic acne covering my face. I consulted many doctors and received the same ineffective treatments of long-term antibiotics and drying ointments, Ever hopeful, I tried one more doctor, who recommended Accutane. To be allowed to start this drug, I was presented with a legal document to sign that required me to be on two forms of birth control because of the almost guaranteed risk of severe birth defects in case of pregnancy.

This sounded like an overly toxic solution that would probably be unhealthy for me as well, so I walked out the door and decided to search for my own answers, even though I knew nothing about natural wellness at the time. I hit the library and what few natural health websites that existed back then and learned all I could. Within 2 1/2 years, I no longer had acne and I helped family members to change their diets so that they no longer needed hypertension or cholesterol medications. I spent most of my free time learning more about health, leading to attending graduate school in nutrition and starting a brand new career. I love helping people find their health and happiness!

How have your personal experiences helped you work with your clients?

I understand what it’s like to start with no health knowledge and how overwhelming the sheer amount of (often conflicting) information in this field can be. I also relate to the sense of frustration and even anger that can arise when no one seems to have answers. In my experience, I also found that “supplement fatigue” is a real concern, and as a result, I strive to keep protocols simple.

What one thing have you learned through your own nutrition therapy?

One major challenge I overcame was how to implement a whole-food way of eating with a busy life and a limited budget. I’ve developed methods to make real food your fast food – a little preparation goes a long way.

What does a typical session with you look like?

I start with a 90-minute session to find out about your symptoms, health history, personal history, diet, and lifestyle. We also discuss what your goals are and what your readiness is to take action toward your goals. We come up with a preliminary eating plan and initial lifestyle changes that you feel fairly confident you can put into action. If you have any blood labs, I’ll review them from a nutritional standpoint.

In weekly follow up sessions, we discuss your progress and I help you overcome any challenges. We review any new lab work and assess your readiness to take more advanced steps to help your body to heal more deeply. I typically work with each patient for three to six months and communicate with their doctor if they are working with one.

Therapy Styles

Short Term (Solution-focused, etc.)
Ideal for those who are coming in with a specific problem they’d like to address and gain clarity on. Typically, short term therapies are present focused and do not dive deep into your past.

Structured
Structured therapies are goal and progress oriented. Therapists may incorporate psychoeducation and a specific “curriculum.” In order to stay on track, therapists may provide worksheets and homework.

Insight-oriented (Psychodynamic, Existential, etc.)
Exploring the past and making connections to present issues can help clients gain insight. Getting to the root of the issue and finding deeper self-awareness can help with long-term change.

Non-directive (Humanistic, Person-centered, etc.)
Going with the flow and seeing where it leads.

Behavioral (CBT, DBT, etc.)
Focuses on changing potentially unhealthy or self-destructive behaviors by addressing problematic thought patterns and specific providing coping skills.

Trauma Focused (EMDR, TF-CBT, etc.)
Recognizing the connection between trauma experiences and your emotional and behavioral responses, trauma focused therapy seeks to help you heal from traumas.
